Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be based in the UK or regularly contribute to UK-based publications.
  • Applicants must be engaged professionally, regularly, and substantially in the writing or broadcasting of film criticism or analytical features for at least two years.
  • Criticism and analytical pieces must form a substantial part of the applicant’s output, whether as staff, contract, or freelance contributors.

Professional Output

  • Applicants should have published a minimum of 20 film or television articles within the last 12 months.
  • Reviews must be original critical commentary, not limited to plot summaries or press release information.
  • Articles must appear in recognised media—print, radio, television, or established online outlets. Social media posts are not eligible, but professional YouTube channels may be considered individually.
  • Online outlets must have a demonstrable audience and have been active for at least two years.

Application Process

  • Applicants must complete an application form providing:
  • Name and contact details
  • Brief professional bio (max 50 words)
  • List of publications and links to recent work
  • Proof of professional activity (e.g., links to published reviews)
  • Address for membership card
  • Applications must be accompanied by a recommendation from an existing member or a reference from an editor, where possible.
  • All fields must be completed for the application to be considered.

Ongoing Membership Requirements

  • Members must continue to publish a minimum of 20 articles annually to maintain active status.
  • Members are expected to vote in the annual awards.
  • Members must adhere to the association’s code of conduct and uphold the integrity of film criticism.
